Sing! Proverbs 1

About the Song Sing! Proverbs is a Scripture-based song series that seeks to transform the Book of Proverbs into singable lyrics while preserving the original meaning of the biblical text. Rather than reproducing a Bible translation word-for-word, each song aims to communicate the same teachings, themes, structure, and message in modern poetic language suitable for worship, meditation, memorisation, and personal devotion. This adaptation of Proverbs 1 was written using a meaning-focused approach. The chapter was first analysed according to its literary structure: 1. The Purpose of Proverbs (1:1-6) Wisdom, instruction, understanding, prudence, and learning. 2. The Foundation of Wisdom (1:7) The fear of the Lord as the beginning of knowledge. 3. A Son's Instruction (1:8-9) Listening to the wisdom of father and mother. 4. Warning Against Sinful Companions (1:10-19) Rejecting the invitation of sinners, violence, greed, and dishonest gain. 5. Wisdom's Public Call (1:20-33) Wisdom calling openly, warning of consequences, and promising security to those who listen. The song follows this same progression in order, allowing listeners to experience Proverbs 1 as a continuous musical narrative. While many phrases have been reworded to fit melody, rhyme, and song structure, the central teachings of the chapter have been intentionally preserved. The adaptation was evaluated for two goals: Faithfulness to Meaning: approximately 9/10 Similarity to Original Wording: intentionally low, approximately 2/10 This means the lyrics are designed to remain recognisably Proverbs 1 in content and message while avoiding extensive verbatim reproduction of any specific Bible translation. The emphasis is on communicating the same truths rather than repeating the same wording. The long-term purpose of the Sing! Proverbs series is to help people: Learn biblical wisdom through music. Remember Scripture more easily. Reflect on the teachings of Proverbs in a modern, singable format. Engage with the themes and structure of each chapter without departing from its intended meaning. The goal is not to replace the Bible, but to serve as a musical companion that encourages listeners to return to the biblical text itself and grow in wisdom, understanding, and the fear of the Lord.
