Mathematical and algorithmic advances in artificial intelligence are drastically reducing energy requirements per unit of capacity, outpacing the rate of hardware improvement. Innovative techniques—such as optimal scaling, the use of mixture-of-experts models, low-precision computing, and the restructuring of attention mechanisms—enable high performance with significantly less computing power. Despite these remarkable efficiency gains, the industry's total energy consumption continues to skyrocket. This phenomenon is driven by the Jevons paradox, wherein the savings achieved are not banked but immediately reinvested into developing increasingly large and complex models.
