Take Mount Everest, the tallest mountain on Earth, and drop it into the deepest part of the ocean. It disappears. The peak slips under the surface, sinks past the last trace of sunlight, and comes to rest on the bottom. And there is still more than a mile of water sitting on top of it.
So, how deep is the ocean, really? Not the number you half remember from a school textbook. The real answer, the one your body would feel if you tried to go there. And the answer is stranger than any number.
In this video, we dive into the Mariana Trench to explore the true scale of our planet's oceans. We look at the crushing pressure that can shrink a foam cup to the size of a thimble, the terrifying 1960 descent of the Trieste, and the bizarre creatures that survive in total darkness. We'll also uncover why, a century after we learned to fly, we still have sharper maps of Mars than of our own seafloor.
We look up at the stars and wonder what is out there. And all this time, the strangest place we know of has been sitting right beneath our feet, waiting in the dark.
Would you ever get into a submarine and go to the bottom of the Mariana Trench? Let me know in the comments below.
