Can God speak to us through dreams? Holy Scripture shows that He can. Yet the Holy Fathers repeatedly warn Christians not to place their trust in dreams. The Orthodox teaching on dreams is deeply discerning. Dreams may arise from the body, memories, thoughts, passions, fears, imagination, or spiritual deception, while in exceptional circumstances God may also permit a genuine revelation. The difficulty is that we usually do not possess the spiritual discernment necessary to know the difference. Saint Gregory the Dialogist explains the different origins of dreams. Saint Symeon the New Theologian shows how the passions of the soul can be reflected in them. Saint John Climacus warns that even a dream which appears to come true may become a means of deception. And Saint Diadochos of Photiki teaches the safest path of all: humility, caution, and trust in Christ rather than confidence in extraordinary experiences. The Christian does not need secret dreams in order to know the will of God. We have Christ, the Gospel, prayer, repentance, the life of the Church, and the path handed down to us by the Holy Fathers.
