A Hidden Cornish Church with Medieval Secrets | St Keyne

St Keyne Church, standing above the village of St Keyne near Liskeard, is a beautiful example of a Cornish parish church with medieval origins and a fascinating history. The present church dates largely from the 15th century, although evidence suggests that an earlier church stood on the site, possibly dating back to the Norman period. The building includes a medieval west tower, north aisle, chancel and south porch, while much of what we see today was extensively restored between 1868 and 1877 by the Victorian architect J. P. St Aubyn. The restoration was substantial, with parts of the church being rebuilt, but a number of important medieval features survive, including the 15th-century octagonal font and elements of the Perpendicular Gothic architecture. One of the most intriguing features inside St Keyne Church is its stained glass. In the east window of the north aisle are fragments of 15th-century glass, including two heraldic shields associated with the Kendall family, providing a rare glimpse of the church's medieval past. Other windows and architectural features reflect the later Victorian restoration, creating an interesting contrast between the surviving medieval fabric and the 19th-century work. The church is dedicated to St Keyne, a Celtic saint traditionally said to have been one of the children of the Welsh King Brychan. She is also associated with the famous St Keyne's Holy Well, situated a short distance from the village. According to local tradition, the first member of a newly married couple to drink from the well would become the dominant partner — a piece of Cornish folklore that helped make St Keyne's Well famous far beyond the parish.
