A depressão é uma doença do cérebro? Neste vídeo, discuto por que essa pergunta exige mais rigor do que a resposta habitual permite. Há correlatos cerebrais associados à depressão, incluindo diferenças médias de estrutura, atividade e conectividade. Mas não há, até hoje, uma alteração específica, necessária e suficiente que permita defini-la como uma doença cerebral no sentido anatomopatológico ou diagnosticá-la por neuroimagem em um indivíduo. Também discutimos a história dos antidepressivos e a hipótese da serotonina. Antidepressivos podem ser importantes e eficazes, mas o fato de atuarem sobre neurotransmissores não demonstra que a depressão seja uma simples “falta de serotonina”. Por fim, defendo a necessidade da psicopatologia fenomenológica: compreender o sofrimento depressivo exige mais do que localizar regiões cerebrais. Exige descrever como se transformam a experiência do corpo, do tempo, dos outros e do futuro.
