We tend to treat wellbeing as something we add on once the real work is done, but in this episode Amy Green returns to a framework from her book Wellbeing Leadership and makes a different case — that a well and successful life is one we design across four domains: feeling well, working well, teaming well, and leading well. She walks through why the order matters, from the pile of micro-stresses that decides how a whole day feels, to the unclear processes that turn good work into frustration, to the family meeting no one has thought to call — and why these four are a lens for the whole of life, not only the workplace. It's less a checklist and more a set of honest questions worth sitting with: where are the leaks, and what would it take to design them out?
What you'll explore in this episode
You'll explore why a well and successful life comes down to four domains — feeling well, working well, teaming well and leading well — and why Amy treats them as conditions to design rather than outcomes to hope for.
You'll look at why the order matters, and why you can't build a high-functioning team until the way you work is clear, or lead others well until you've done the work on yourself first.
You'll examine how a run of small, ordinary stresses — the spilt coffee, the unexpected email, the jammed photocopier — stacks up into a day where you no longer feel well, and what coping with normal stress actually asks of us.
You'll consider what psychological safety really means in a team, at work and at home, and how to tell the difference between a group of people who get along and a team that genuinely functions.
You'll think about self-leadership — leading a life that fits the season you're in — and why showing up honestly beats putting on a front you can't sustain.
Key ideas from this episode
A well life isn't something we add on at the end; it's something we design across four domains at once.
Feeling well isn't being happy all the time — it's knowing how to cope with the normal, everyday stresses that stack up.
Most people don't struggle because they dislike their work; they struggle because the systems around the work aren't clear.
A team that knows each other's coffee order is a group. A team that functions, challenges and supports each other is something else.
Leading well starts with leading yourself — and the story people invent when you say nothing is rarely the one you'd choose.
