As the sickness spreads through the town, he rescues his teenage sister Tamsin and drives to his grandfather Walter's farm, where Walter has spent fifty years secretly building a deep underground shelter. Walter built it because he survived the same horror in a sealed coal mine in 1974, where something ancient and lonely living in a black pool under the sea began taking over the dead. Eli, Tamsin and a growing group of survivors, including a priest, a trucker and a busload of schoolchildren, shelter below ground, but they slowly learn that the thing has been in the well water all along and can speak through anyone's voice, and people die and turn even inside the bunker. Tamsin, who inherited her late mother's ability to hear it, realizes the creature isn't cruel, only desperate for a mother's comfort. She and Eli, Walter, and a deaf scientist go down to the mine, where Tamsin sings it a lullaby while Walter sets off his old dynamite and sacrifices himself, putting the creature to sleep and dropping the dead for good. In the epilogue, the survivors rebuild, and Tamsin quietly answers when the well starts humming again.
