Seeing that the crowd could not be calmed, Pilate publicly washes his hands, declaring that he is innocent of Jesus' blood, while the people accept responsibility for His death. Pilate releases Barabbas and hands Jesus over to be flogged and crucified. The Roman soldiers mock Jesus by dressing Him in a scarlet robe, placing a crown of thorns on His head, and pretending to honor Him as "King of the Jews." They strike Him, spit on Him, and lead Him away to be crucified. Along the way, they force Simon of Cyrene to carry Jesus' cross. At Golgotha, Jesus is crucified between two criminals. The soldiers cast lots for His clothing, fulfilling Scripture, and a sign above His head reads, "This is Jesus, the King of the Jews." Passersby, religious leaders, and even the criminals beside Him mock Him, challenging Him to save Himself if He is truly the Son of God. Yet Jesus remains on the cross, willingly enduring the suffering to accomplish God's plan of redemption.
