Join me for a beautiful late October walk through Järla Sjö, a rather spectacular waterfront neighborhood just outside central Stockholm.
It’s one of those perfect autumn days – brilliant colors, sunshine, blue skies and blue water. We begin along the shore of Järlasjön, walking on the waterfront paths and wooden piers beside houses whose balconies seem to hang almost directly over the lake.
But Järla Sjö is much more than a modern residential development. The area has a long industrial history, and several of the old factory buildings remain an important part of the neighborhood.
Industrial development began here in the late 19th century. De Laval’s steam turbine company established a major factory at Järla in the 1890s, and several of the impressive old industrial buildings have been preserved and given new uses.
Out on the pier, we also pass a small AGA lighthouse from 1927. Today, it stands as a reminder of Järla Sjö’s industrial heritage and its connection to AGA and Swedish inventor Gustaf Dalén, whose innovations revolutionized lighthouse technology. Dalén was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1912.
We also pass Järla gård, where we encounter one of the area’s more unusual stories: that of Carin Ersdotter, better known as “Den vackra kullan” – “The Beautiful Dalecarlian Girl”.
In 1833, 19-year-old Carin Ersdotter from Dalarna began working as a milkmaid at Järla gård. Part of her job was to travel into Stockholm to sell the estate’s milk at Stortorget in the Old Town. Her beauty caused an extraordinary sensation. Crowds gathered simply to catch a glimpse of her, newspapers wrote about her, and artists wanted to portray her. For a brief period, she became something of a celebrity in 1830s Stockholm.
But the sudden fame came at a price. Carin was already engaged to a man back home in Dalarna, and when she returned, rumors about her life in Stockholm had reached the village. Despite having asked members of Stockholm society to certify that she had lived a respectable life, her fiancé reportedly distrusted her and broke off the engagement. She later married another man and had six children.
Her remarkable story is still remembered at Järla today – almost 200 years after crowds once gathered to see “The Beautiful Dalecarlian Girl”.
A peaceful autumn walk through a neighborhood where lake views, modern architecture, industrial heritage and much older Swedish history come together.
