Australia Just Built What China Feared Most!
#australia #rareearths #technology
In 2023, a processing facility 595 kilometres east of Perth turned a grey powder called monazite into roughly 10,500 tonnes of rare earth oxides, more than any operation outside China. The company behind it, Lynas Rare Earths, now supplies about seven percent of the world's rare earths from mines and plants Beijing does not control, backed by lithium refineries rising across Western Australia and contracts with the US Department of Defense and Japan. This is not a country replacing China's supply chain, it is a country building the one China cannot switch off.
In this video, we trace how Lynas Rare Earths turned the Mount Weld deposit into Australia's rare earth answer to China, explain why China's dominance was built on processing chemistry rather than geology, follow the 2010 export restrictions that spiked prices worldwide, walk through the Kalgoorlie, Kuantan and Texas processing plants, cover Australia's parallel lithium hydroxide build-out at Kwinana, Kemerton and Covalent Lithium, examine the contracts with the US Department of Defense, Japan and global automakers, and weigh the honest limits still facing the industry.
Australia didn't try to out-produce China's rare earth empire - it built the one supply chain Beijing can't switch off.
