Take an early morning walk with me from Karlsplatz to Belvedere Palace in Vienna, Austria 🇦🇹, before the city wakes up
We start at 6:17 in the morning on a frosty autumn day. It’s only 1–2°C, the air is cold and clear, and Vienna is still quiet. ❄️ At this hour you can enjoy some of the city’s most beautiful places almost completely on your own, without the usual crowds.
Our walk begins at Karlsplatz, where the stalls for the famous Christmas market in front of St. Charles’s Church (Karlskirche) are being built right now. 🎄 Past the huge Baroque church we head to Schwarzenbergplatz with the Hochstrahlbrunnen fountain and the Soviet War Memorial. From there we walk on to Belvedere. Starting at the Lower Belvedere, we stroll through the wide Baroque gardens and up to the Upper Belvedere Palace. The walk ends at its large pond, where the palace reflects in the water.
No talking, no music, just the sounds of a city slowly waking up: footsteps, birds and the first trams in the distance. Put on your headphones, grab a warm drink ☕ and walk through Vienna as if you were here yourself. 🚶♂️
📍 Route:
Karlsplatz → Karlskirche → Hochstrahlbrunnen → Soviet War Memorial → Lower Belvedere → Belvedere Gardens → Upper Belvedere → Great Pond

💡 Good to know:
Karlskirche was finished in 1737 and is one of the most important Baroque churches north of the Alps
The Hochstrahlbrunnen fountain was built in 1873 to celebrate Vienna’s first mountain spring water pipeline, which still brings fresh alpine water to the city today
Belvedere was built in the early 18th century as the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy. Today the Upper Belvedere houses Gustav Klimt’s world-famous painting “The Kiss”
The palace gardens are free to enter. Come early in the morning for the most peaceful experience
From late November the Karlsplatz Christmas market is one of the most charming in Vienna 🎄
