Why do good strategies fail—even when an organization has talented people, strong leadership, and a clear vision? In this conversation from KMC Controls’ Building Geniuses webinar series, I join host Skye Bryant to explore why organizations become strategically misaligned and what leaders can do about it. We discuss how teams can agree on the same strategic aspiration—like becoming more customer-centric—while translating that strategy into very different decisions and behaviors. Over time, those differences can create friction through slowed decision-making, stalled initiatives, re-litigated issues, departmental conflict, customer disconnect, and leadership churn. I also introduce the Strategic Orientation Index (SOI), a framework for understanding how an organization thinks, listens, and acts. We explore the “hybrid zone,” where individually sound decisions and departmental strategies can combine to create organizational incoherence that often goes unnoticed. Most importantly, we discuss how to make strategy executable by translating it into specific, repeatable behaviors, reinforcing those behaviors through systems and metrics, and asking a simple question: What will people actually do differently on Monday morning?
