Between about 15,000 and 5,000 years ago, the Sahara was green: grassland, rivers, a lake bigger than all the Great Lakes combined, with hippos and crocodiles in what is now the desert. So we gave today's Sahara that rain back, ten times what it gets now, overnight, and fast-forwarded.
Ifo and his robot companion IF-0 follow the change step by step, from one dry valley to the whole planet. The grass marches north, Lake Megachad returns and swallows one of the dustiest spots on Earth, and hippos swim into the Sahara. Then the change crosses the Atlantic: the Amazon, which gets a phosphorus refill from Saharan dust every year, would miss the dust. And in climate models, a green Sahara means busier hurricanes and a calmer El Niño on the other side of the world.
Finally, the biggest step of all: over the last 8 million years, the Sahara has turned green more than 230 times.
