The church's most ancient feature is its unbuttressed west tower, dating back to circa 1275, crowned by a broach spire with two tiers of lucarnes. Notably, this spire is considered the oldest in Bedfordshire. The original medieval structure experienced significant decay in the 18th century, leading to a reconstruction in 1800. However, this iteration lasted only until 1860, when a more substantial rebuilding took place under the guidance of architect Henry Clutton.
