Your Toyota hybrid battery probably isn't what will take your car off the road. After nearly two decades on the Toyota service drive in the UK and Canada, here are the seven things that really kill Toyota hybrids, and what to check this weekend.
Most owners fear the big hybrid battery and its replacement cost. In the service bay, it's one of the parts that fails least. What actually puts Toyota hybrids on a tow truck is smaller, quieter and far cheaper to prevent: a weak 12-volt battery, a clogged battery cooling vent, salt-seized brakes, a second coolant system nobody checks, a known EGR weakness on the Gen 3 Prius, and winter behaviour that gets misdiagnosed as a fault. This video walks through each one from a Canadian service advisor's point of view, with what to look for and what to do, then closes with what Toyota Canada actually puts in writing on hybrid battery warranty coverage.
WHAT THIS VIDEO COVERS
• Why a dead 12-volt battery makes a healthy hybrid look completely dead, and why Canadian winters drain it fastest
• The hybrid battery cooling vent and filter beside the rear seat, and how pet hair and dust can cook the battery
• The "Maintenance Required for Traction Battery Cooling Parts" message and what Toyota's owner's manuals say to do
• Why regenerative braking leaves hybrid brakes exposed to road salt, rust and seized slide pins
• The separate inverter coolant reservoir under the hood, and how to check it
• Third-generation Prius (2010–2015) EGR carbon buildup, its link to head gasket failure, and what used-car buyers should check
• Why your hybrid's engine runs more and fuel economy drops in winter, and why that usually isn't a fault
• Toyota Canada's hybrid battery warranty: 10 years or 240,000 km from model year 2020, and the 8-year/160,000 km hybrid system coverage
