This upscaled, restored, and colorized archival documentary examines the twin engines of Allied victory in World War II: frontline amphibious and carrier warfare across the Pacific and European theaters, and the aeronautical engineering breakthroughs achieved at Wright Field, Ohio. The chronological record opens in mid-1943 in the northern Solomon Islands, where Allied air attacks softened Japanese bases on Bougainville before the 3rd Marine Division landed at Cape Torokina and Puruata on November 1, 1943. Reinforced by the 37th Division and XIV Corps under General Oscar Griswold, American troops fought in dense jungle while surgeons operated in underground bunkers 50 yards from bursting shells. Naval Construction Battalions carved three operational runways out of volcanic mud by January 1944, allowing C-47 Skytrains to resupply frontline units before artillery and infantry broke General Masatane Kanda’s Imperial 6th Division in March 1944. Shifting to the Central Pacific, the film details flight deck operations aboard US Navy fleet carriers steaming at 30 knots into the wind, where Landing Signal Officers guided pilots onto pitching wooden decks. In November 1943, a vast task force converged on 290-acre Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands. Despite 200 carrier aircraft and 3,000 tons of naval shells pummeling the atoll, a misjudged low tide stranded landing craft on the coral reef, forcing the 2nd Marine Division to wade ashore under heavy fire during a grueling four-day battle. In February 1944, carrier aviation struck Japan’s fortified anchorage at Truk Lagoon, where Grumman F6F Hellcats out-climbed and out-dived Mitsubishi Zeros, enabling dive bombers to sink 200,000 tons of shipping in a single day. After documenting Allied amphibious landings in Normandy, the film enters the US Army Air Forces Materiel Division at Wright Field in 1944. Footage showcases the 1923 six-engine XNBL-1 Barling Bomber alongside the B-29 Superfortress, desert and Arctic survival gear, 45-foot propeller test stands, B-23 engine hoists, B-17 Flying Fortress full-feathering propellers, the counter-rotating Curtiss XP-62, wing sandbag stress trials, intentional stone-wall crash fire tests, 80,000-foot high-altitude chambers, C-87 transports, C-47 autopilots, the 1937 C-45 automated blind landing, de Bothezat and Sikorsky R-4, R-5, and R-6 helicopters, Randolph Field AT-6 Texan training, P-47, P-38, P-51, P-39, B-24, B-26, and B-25 formations, and the liberation of Bayeux and Sainte-Mère-Église with Brigadier General Theodore Roosevelt Jr. To support our work and channel, join @    / @dronescapes   Thank you! 🙏🎖️ ➤ More aircraft and history videos:    / @dronescapes   ➤ Join the channel:    / @dronescapes   ➤ THREADS: https://www.threads.net/@dronescapesv... ➤ FB:   / dronescapesvideos   ➤ Reddit:   / atellani   ➤ IG:   / dronescapesvideos   ➤ BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/dronescapes.... ➤ Tumblr: https://www.tumblr.com/blog/dronescap... ➤ X/Twitter: https://dronescapes.video/2p89vedj VIDEO SERIES: 🎥U.S. AIRCRAFT VIDEOS: https://dronescapes.video/US 🎥AVIATION VIDEOS: https://dronescapes.video/aviation 🎥GERMAN AIRCRAFT VIDEOS: https://dronescapes.video/WWIIGermany 🎥BRITISH AIRCRAFT VIDEOS: https://dronescapes.video/British 🎥ERIC BROWN VIDEOS: https://dronescapes.video/EricBrown 🎥B-29 VIDEOS: https://dronescapes.video/B29 🎥EXTREME AIRCRAFT VIDEOS: https://dronescapes.video/Extreme 🎥STRANGE PLANES VIDEOS: https://dronescapes.video/Extreme 🎥 WW2 VIDEOS: https://dronescapes.video/WW2 00:00:00 Pacific Carrier Warfare & Wright Field Overview 00:01:34 The Bougainville Campaign & Cape Torokina Landings 00:04:35 Reinforcements, Underground Hospitals & Seabee Airstrips 00:06:40 Defeating General Kanda's 6th Division Counterattack 00:10:50 The Central Pacific Perimeter & Japanese Strategy 00:12:29 US Navy Aircraft Carrier Flight Deck Operations 00:15:11 Task Force Assembly & Invasion of Tarawa Atoll 00:19:34 Low Tide on the Coral Reef: Marines Ashore at Tarawa 00:25:12 Truk Lagoon: F6F Hellcats Crush the Japanese Gibraltar 00:30:41 Dive Bombers Sink 200,000 Tons of Imperial Shipping 00:34:14 Allied Invasion Convoy & Normandy Beachhead Bombardment 00:46:32 Wright Field 1944: From the 1923 Barling Bomber to the B-29 00:47:51 High-Altitude Survival Kits & Aerial Reconnaissance Labs 00:48:42 Propeller Test Stands, B-17 Feathering & XP-62 Props 00:50:36 Structural Wing Load Trials & Stone-Wall Crash Tests 00:51:21 80,000-Foot Pressure Chambers & Rapid Decompression 00:52:29 C-47 Autopilot, 1937 Blind Landing & Target Gliders 00:53:52 Parachute Free-Fall Trials, De Bothezat & Sikorsky Helicopters 00:55:15 Randolph Field AT-6 Cadets & USAAF Combat Formations 00:56:42 Liberation of Bayeux, Sainte-Mere-Eglise & Brig.
