On April 18, 1942, sixteen American B-25 bombers launched from the USS Hornet to attack Japan. None of them could return to land on the aircraft carrier. So why did America send 80 airmen on a mission with no way back?
The Doolittle Raid was one of World War II's most daring operations. Just four months after Pearl Harbor, the United States needed a way to strike the Japanese homeland. But conventional bombers lacked the necessary range, and bringing American aircraft carriers too close to Japan could risk losing the Navy's most valuable warships.
Led by Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle, sixteen modified B-25 Mitchell bombers attempted an extraordinary mission across the Pacific. When Japanese patrol boats discovered the American task force, Admiral William Halsey ordered an early launch, turning an already dangerous operation into an even greater gamble.
This documentary explores the planning, carrier takeoffs, bombing of Japan, desperate journey toward China, and the raid's psychological and strategic consequences—including its relationship to the Battle of Midway and the devastating Japanese reprisals in China.
Was the Doolittle Raid a military failure, a psychological victory, or something more complicated?
