Have you ever had the perfect English sentence ready in your head… and then said nothing at all?
From the outside you look calm, but inside a small voice says, "Don't. You'll get it wrong." Your English is often better than that voice thinks. The problem is not your grammar. It is trust, and trust in yourself is something you can build, one small sentence at a time.
In this English speaking podcast lesson, Paul and Emily talk about why we doubt ourselves so easily, where real confidence comes from, and what to do after a mistake so it does not follow you for years. You will hear Emily's story about a pharmacy, a sore throat and a perfect sentence she never said, Paul's story about calling his manager by the wrong name, and a short role play with a friend who is nervous about a job interview in English.
This lesson is made for B1–B2 learners who want to stop doubting themselves, speak up even when they feel nervous, and talk about doubt and encouragement in natural English.
🎧 WHAT YOU'LL PRACTICE
✨ Eight expressions with 'yourself': believe in yourself, doubt yourself, second-guess yourself, talk yourself out of something, cut yourself some slack, give yourself credit, step out of your comfort zone, prove yourself
✨ When you feel new: I'm still learning, and that's okay. / I'm new at this, so please bear with me.
✨ Before you speak: I'll give it a go. / Let me try that again.
✨ After a mistake: What would I do differently next time? / I'll cut myself some slack.
✨ Notice your progress: I did that. Good for me. / Give yourself some credit.
✨ Talking about doubt: I'm having second thoughts. / I keep second-guessing myself. / I'm not sure I can pull this off.
✨ Encouraging a friend: You've got this. / Just give it a go. / You don't have to prove yourself to everyone.
✨ Everyday words: bored vs boring, drowsiness, comfort zone, pull something off
✨ Your turn: a four-situation quiz with pauses to answer, plus a review where you repeat every expression
The goal is not to stop feeling doubt. The goal is to stop letting doubt choose your words. Doubt is a visitor, not the boss.

💡 HOW TO USE THIS LESSON
Listen once and enjoy the stories. Then play the review and the quiz again and say every answer out loud before Paul and Emily do. Today, say one English sentence that you once talked yourself out of saying, and keep the line Doubt is a visitor, not the boss in your pocket.
💬 YOUR SPEAKING CHALLENGE
Complete this sentence in the comments:
“I talked myself out of saying ___ , but today I will say it.”
Write the English sentence you almost said, but didn't. Example: I talked myself out of saying "Could you speak more slowly?", but today I will say it. Then reply to another learner and tell them, "You've got this."
