The Falcon 6.1 features a mechanism that uses a servo-driven hook to hold the rotating flapping drive wheel in place and lock the main wing into the gliding position. It is an ornithopter equipped with a simple twisted-wing flapping mechanism and a Watts-Link flapping-arm mechanism that requires minimal lateral movement.
Key aspects of bird flight include efficient flapping wings, gliding performance that allows for sustained flight without losing altitude, and agile attitude control.
Conventional GLDAB systems had low accuracy in fixing the wings in the gliding position, with a success rate of only about 20% to 60%, making soaring difficult.
To address this issue, I developed a mechanism that uses a servo-driven hook to hold a rotating flapping drive wheel in a predetermined position, thereby locking the main wing into the gliding position.
To achieve agile attitude control, I developed a simple method for controlling the flight of a flapping-wing aircraft by adjusting the wing angle.
Many birds keep their tail surfaces closed during flapping flight, controlling their flight attitude almost entirely with their wings and fuselage.
During sudden changes in flight attitude—such as sharp turns, deceleration, takeoff, and landing—or during maneuvers requiring high lift, such as hovering or gliding, they spread their wings and tail surfaces to the maximum to increase wing area.
Based on these observations, and on the idea that mimicking steady-state bird flight would allow flight attitude to be controlled solely by adjusting the main wings—thereby enabling a simple and lightweight structure—we built a wide-body, long-link-arm ornithopter utilizing this mechanism.
