Falcon-4: An Ornithopter Featuring a Simple Twisted-Wing Flapping Mechanism and a Wide-Body, Long-Link-Arm Design
The Falcon-4 is an ornithopter equipped with a simple twisted-wing flapping mechanism.
I have developed a simple method for controlling the flight of a flapping-wing aircraft by adjusting the angle of the wings.
Many birds keep their tail surfaces retracted during flapping flight, controlling their flight attitude almost entirely with the wings and fuselage.
During sudden changes in flight attitude—such as sharp turns, deceleration, takeoff, and landing—or during maneuvers requiring high lift, such as hovering or gliding, they extend the wings and tail surfaces to their maximum extent to increase the wing area.
Based on these observations, and on the idea that mimicking steady-state bird flight would allow flight attitude to be controlled solely by adjusting the main wings—thereby enabling a simple and lightweight structure—we created a wide-body, long-link-arm ornithopter that applies this mechanism.
