Britain's biggest robbery went wrong the moment the robbers opened the vault. On 26 November 1983, six armed men came to Unit 7, a warehouse at Heathrow, for a few million pounds in cash. They found 6,800 gold bars, nearly three tonnes, worth £26 million, and took every one. Every bar carried a serial number. Forty-three years later, about half of that gold has never been accounted for.
This file follows the gold from the vault to the furnace: the guard who let them in, the petrol and the changed combination, the reconstruction that exposed him, why stamped bullion could not simply be spent, the Jersey paperwork trick, the Bristol firm Scadlynn that sold about £13 million of melted gold, the night Detective Constable John Fordham died in a Kent garden, the Panama Papers note on Feberion, what Lloyd's of London clawed back, the so-called curse, and where the other half might have gone. The BBC drama The Gold returns for its second season on PBS Masterpiece on October 18, 2026.
Dated facts, as of October 12, 2026. Convictions and acquittals are court outcomes: Kenneth Noye was acquitted of murdering DC Fordham (self-defence, December 1985) and convicted of conspiring to handle the gold (July 1986, 14 years and a £500,000 fine); John Palmer and Tony White were acquitted. The deaths grouped as the "curse of Brink's-Mat" are reported deaths; in almost every case no court has connected them to the gold, and no one is accused here. Mossack Fonseca has denied wrongdoing. The expected cash is given differently in different sources (£1 million to about £3 million); "about half" of the gold missing is an estimate.
