4 June 1942, ten in the morning, north of Midway Atoll. Japan's carrier striking force, the Kido Butai, has just beaten off attack after attack. Then American dive bombers that had been searching for an hour arrive almost four miles overhead, and in about six minutes three of Japan's best carriers are burning. In this episode we walk through the Battle of Midway on 3D sea maps built from real bathymetry: six months of Japanese victories, the two fleets, an ocean where finding the enemy was the whole battle, the codebreakers at Station Hypo, Yamamoto's plan and Nimitz's ambush, Nagumo's impossible morning, the six minutes, Hiryu's counterstrike and Yorktown's end, the real cost, why the stronger fleet lost, five what-ifs, and the aftermath. Where the sources disagree (bomb counts, the course of Hornet's air group, Fuchida's "five minutes", what the water ruse really changed) we say so.
