Japan Claimed 11 U.S. Carriers Were Sunk — Why Was the American Fleet Still Out There? In October 1944, Tokyo announced a great victory off Formosa and claimed that a large part of the American fleet had been sunk. Admiral Halsey's Third Fleet was still at sea, and the only large ships seriously damaged were two crippled cruisers, the Canberra and the Houston, that Halsey used as bait. This video explains how the Formosa air battle turned into a false victory that cost Japan hundreds of aircraft and many of its last trained pilots. It shows how the lie helped lead Japan to throw away its remaining carrier air power just days before the Battle of Leyte Gulf. #formosa #battleoffformosa #halsey #usnavy #navalhistory #pacificwar #ww2 #worldwar2 #leytegulf #aircraftcarrier #history #militaryhistory #wwiihistory #historydocumentary #documentary
