July 12th, 1943 - The Battle of Kursk is in full swing, and both the German and Soviet Armies are throwing everything they have into an all or nothing fight that will likely decide the fate of the war. Having essentially stopped an Axis summer offensive cold for the first time since the invasion began, the Red Army is now looking to press its advantage. While Soviet counterattacks are being carried out all along the line, the 5th Guards Tank Army has been ordered to engage the II SS-Panzer Corps near Prokhorovka. With hundreds of tanks rolling into battle on both sides, the Soviets are scraping the barrel for anyone they can find to fill holes in their crews. Following his heroics (and a healthy dose of luck) at Cherkasskoye and Ponyri, Pvt. Petrenko has been given the "honor" of temporarily serving as a loader in a T-34 while the rest of his squad regroups. So far, he's proved himself every bit the soldier his brother Dmitri is, but he is untested as a tanker. Armed with only a few hours of training shoving shells into a gun breech, his survival will now rest largely on the skill of his fellow crew members. A lot of trust to place in three men he's only known since breakfast, but trust them he must. And welcome to Episode 28! 28, and we're probably not even halfway done! I'm interested to know the grand total of videos this game will end up being. CoD 1 is a long game, longer with United Offensive and even longer with all the modded missions United Fronts adds into the mix. I'm playing UF mostly blind, and a lot of the existing playthroughs already up on YouTube seem to be from older versions before stuff like Market Garden was added in, so the final total will be a bit of a surprise to me. Anyway, here we have the first tank mission of the series (the second, counting the World at War mission, if you're watching my chronology)! It's decent, I mean I've never personally been a huge fan of the CoD 1 tank missions, I feel like the gameplay is very shallow and the combat just isn't all that satisfying, but I personally think I got decent footage here. Decent enough for the 20-30 views I'm sure to get lmao! But yeah, overall they definitely improved on these levels with future games. Hell, even Finest Hour, CoD 1's console spin off, had more interesting tank missions in my opinion. You could pop in and out of the hatch and use your gun from the turret, even get in and out at will. It was actually pretty cool, very underrated. I do intend to eventually do a playthrough of that game via the Dolphin emulator, though probably not for a very long time. Anyway, I've rambled enough, enjoy! As always, using the United Fronts Mod, which combines CoD 1, UO and a ton of custom modded missions together into one massive campaign, with updates to weapons, sounds, textures, numerous quality of life tweaks and changes, etc. Check out their ModDB page for a more comprehensive description, links included below. No HUD, shut off via mod options. I added music at the beginning from War Thunder, and a song at the end, "March of the Soviet Tankists", which I thought fit pretty well. The vanilla music imo is pretty underwhelming on this mission - I didn't even have to turn it off to play other music over it, which gives you an idea of how understated it is. That sort of thing is good on missions with a little more going on in the dialogue and sound effects department, not so for this particular mission. Anyway, other than that, no changes on my part. What you see is pretty much what you get with the mod. United Fronts Mod: https://www.moddb.com/mods/call-of-du...
