Of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, only one has left behind no definitive physical trace, no archaeological footprint, and no mention in the imperial records of the king who supposedly built it: The Hanging Gardens of Babylon. In 1899, German archaeologist Robert Koldewey began excavating the ancient tell of Babylon along the Euphrates River in modern-day Iraq. Over the course of nearly two decades, Koldewey uncovered monumental royal palaces, miles of fortified defense walls, and the iconic glazed-brick Ishtar Gate. Yet, the legendary stepped terraces—allegedly built by King Nebuchadnezzar II for Queen Amytis—were nowhere to be found. Even more puzzling: Nebuchadnezzar was one of the most prolific builders in Mesopotamian history, documenting every temple, street, and brick kiln in exhausting detail. Yet his surviving royal inscriptions remain completely silent about any hanging garden. When the Greek historian Herodotus visited Babylon in the 5th century BC, he too recorded nothing of the wonder. So where did the legend originate? Could centuries of Greco-Roman writers have confused the ruins of Babylon with Nineveh and the conquests of Assyrian King Sennacherib? Or did the story simply grow in the retelling, transforming a modest palace courtyard into a myth of stone and water? Welcome to Ancient Lore — echoes of the forgotten empires.
