In October 1999, a Boulder grand jury voted to indict John and Patsy Ramsey. District Attorney Alex Hunter refused to sign. For 14 years, almost no one outside a small circle knew the vote had even happened.
Alex Hunter died in November 2025, at 89, a month short of his 90th birthday. In this video, we look at the two sides of the man: the prosecutor Boulder knew for 28 years, and the one America remembers for a single decision. We look at why he said the evidence couldn’t win at trial and what his son said after his death. And with Netflix about to put him on screen, we look at why his decision looks different today than it did in 1999.
John and Patsy Ramsey were never charged, and the family was formally cleared by the Boulder District Attorney in 2008. The case remains open and unsolved.
