Today we’re diving back into TOOL with “Vicarious,” the opening track from their 2006 album 10,000 Days. Musically, “Vicarious” gives us everything that makes TOOL such a fascinating band to explore as classical musicians: intricate rhythmic structures, shifting meters, layered patterns, enormous dynamic development, and the extraordinary interaction between Maynard James Keenan, Adam Jones, Justin Chancellor, and Danny Carey. But the lyrics take the song somewhere much darker. “Vicarious” confronts our fascination with watching tragedy, violence, and suffering from a safe distance—whether through television, news, entertainment, or spectacle—and asks some uncomfortable questions about human nature and why we’re drawn to it. As two classical musicians, we were fascinated by how TOOL connects that unsettling subject matter with music that feels mechanical, hypnotic, complex, and increasingly intense.
