The Best Practice Analyzer in Tabular Editor checks your Power BI semantic model against a set of rules and highlights things worth fixing.
You can do everything in this video with Tabular Editor 2, the free version.
In this video, I walk through:
How to add the Best Practice Analyzer rules
What the rules are actually checking
How to apply the automatic fixes
How to fix issues efficiently when there is no automatic fix
How to edit the rule file and create your own version
The last part turned out to be particularly useful for me.
One of the automatic fixes changed my date format strings to the US MM/dd/yyyy format. I wanted dd/MM/yyyy, so instead of correcting the formats every time, I updated the rule file itself and created my own version.
It is a good example of why I would not treat Best Practice Analyzer rules as something you simply run and accept. They are a very useful starting point, but some rules and fixes may need adapting to your own model, organisation or standards.
I also show how to make manual changes efficiently when a rule does not have an automatic fix, rather than going through objects one by one.
Thanks to Kyle A. Mueller at Tabular Editor, who showed me how he uses the Best Practice Analyzer as a starting point and then adapts the rules for the project.
