EA Sports NHL '96 - All-star Season 1 Whalers Game 21 | The Whalers Get Frustrated by the Flyers

Struggling lately, the Whalers just came off a tough 3-0 loss to the Canadiens and were hosting the Philadelphia Flyers for the first time since their 4-1 victory in Philadelphia in Game 1. This time around the teams proved to be an even match but Hartford started strongly in the 1st period. About four-and-a-half minutes in Geoff Sanderson beat Ron Hextall blocker-side from right beside the net in the corner of the circle off a pass from Andrew Cassels from the hashes in the other circle to open the scoring. Six minutes later Andrew Cassels had a tap-in from right in front after some great work and a sweet backhand pass across the crease by Andrei Nikolishin. At the 1st intermission Hartford was up 2-0 with the shots almost even at HTF 15 and PHI 13. Early in the 2nd period Hartford established the coveted 3-goal lead at 3-0 when Geoff Sanderson went top-glove from between the hashes off a nice pass from Andrew Cassels and secondary assist by Sean Burke. With about fourteen-and-a-half minutes left the Flyers found the back of the net. Eric Lindros sniped top-glove from the edge of the circle at the hashes after flying onto a drop-pass from Mikael Renberg to narrow the lead to 3-1 for Hartford. Both teams had good chances during the period but it was Philadelphia that scored late. With two minutes to go Eric Lindros chased down a loose puck after a big hit on Mikael Renberg by Glen Wesley and then sniped glove-side past Sean Burke. At the 2nd intermission Hartford clung to a 1-goal lead 3-2 with the shots at HTF 25 and PHI 22. The 3rd period saw more of the same steady action from both teams. Hartford extended their lead to 2 goals about six minutes in when Steven Rice scored on the powerplay when he took a hard hit in front of the Flyers' net and lost the puck but it slid in beside the post with Ron Hextall unable to grab it. The Flyers responded about two-and-a-half minutes later as Mikael Renberg picked up Eric Lindros's rebound and put it in glove-side on Sean Burke. The Whalers tried to hang on but "the algorithm" dialed it up and Coach ranted behind the bench when with less than two minutes to go Eric Lindros completed his hat-trick and tied the game at 4-4 when he found the errant puck after Sean Burke made the save on his backhander and scored on the powerplay before Burke could recover. Over-time didn't solve anything with Hartford getting only two shots and Philadelphia only one in the extra five minutes. Enjoy!
