The land is formed from a naturally occurring graphitic composite, shaped by immense pressure and heat over geological time, leaving it finely layered and almost completely matte. The surrounding ocean extends several kilometers deep, composed of dense hydrocarbon fluids saturated with carbon compounds that prevent light from penetrating far beneath its surface. Above the planet stretches an enormous ring system rich in crystalline silicon carbide, remnants of a shattered moon and a material exceptionally rare beyond this system. Carbide was built to track fragments whose orbits slowly decay, predicting where they will enter the atmosphere and disappear into the sea. Many are never recovered.
