The fatal accident of Lorenzo Bandini at the 1967 Monaco Grand Prix remains one of the most tragic and significant events in the history of Formula 1. On May 7th, 1967, during lap 82 of the race, the Italian Ferrari driver lost control of his Ferrari 312 at the harbor chicane in Monaco, causing a catastrophic crash that would sadly take his life three days later. The Ferrari 312 represented the new generation of Formula 1 cars introduced after the 1966 regulation changes. Powered by a naturally aspirated 3.0-liter V12 engine producing around 360 horsepower, the car was extremely fast and powerful, but also heavy, physically demanding, and very difficult to control at the limit. Combined with the narrow streets of Monaco, primitive barriers, and the enormous amount of fuel carried by the car, the conditions for a tragedy were present throughout the race. The accident occurred on the exit of the tunnel, as Bandini approached the harbor chicane. After heavy braking, the car entered the corner slightly wide, striking the outer guardrail with the left rear wheel. The impact was barely absorbed by the tire and suspension, immediately destabilizing the trajectory of the car. After the initial contact, the car began sliding laterally until it struck a rigid structure located next to the barrier. This second impact caused the car to lift and overturn, eventually coming to rest upside down on the track. In that section of the circuit, hay bales had been placed as a protective measure, but they were also flammable and capable of absorbing fuel. When the car overturned, the fuel tanks ruptured and gasoline spilled over the vehicle and the hay bales. At that moment, an almost instantaneous combustion occurred, most likely triggered by a spark generated by metallic friction against the asphalt or by contact between the fuel and hot exhaust components. Although the monocoque remained relatively intact, the driver became trapped while the fuel continued feeding the fire, remaining exposed for more than a minute before he could finally be rescued. The consequences of the accident were immediate for Formula 1 safety.
