What if we have misunderstood biblical comfort?
In 2 Corinthians 1, Paul says God “comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble.”
That phrase — “that we may be able” — changes everything.
Biblical comfort is not just about feeling better or getting away from pressure. It is God strengthening us so we can keep going, keep serving, and help strengthen somebody else.
In this short audiobook, we trace the words comfort and consolation through the King James Bible and uncover some surprising connections. Why does the first comfort in the Bible appear beside work, toil, and the cursed ground? Why does the last comfort establish us in “every good word and work”? Why are there exactly 130 positive comfort-family words — and why does the number 130 keep showing up around preservation, service, strength, and completed work?
Then there is consolation. There are 18 occurrences of consolation and consolations — and the number 18 keeps appearing around bondage, deliverance, strength, and even the great temple pillars. Those same pillars eventually lead us to the church, “the pillar and ground of the truth,” and to the Holy Ghost, our Comforter.
The connections are remarkable, but the conclusion is simple:
God does not comfort us out of the work. He comforts us for the work. He comforts us in the work. And then He sends us back into the lives of others carrying His comfort with us.
