WHEN A STEADY HAND BEGAN TO SHAKE | The Teacher I Still Remember | Dignity in Old Age — Episode 3
Some people teach you a subject.
Others teach you something about life without ever knowing it.
In this episode of Dignity in Old Age, I remember a former Intro-Tech teacher, Mr. Akindele, from my secondary school days at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary Commercial Grammar School, Maryway, Odo-Ona, Ibadan.
He was gentle, calm and responsible.
But later, I witnessed changes in his physical condition. His hands began to shake, his head later appeared to shake, and his strength seemed to reduce.
His marriage had also broken down, and he became increasingly alone.
I heard different explanations about the marriage, but I deliberately avoid judging the people involved because we rarely know the complete story behind another person's relationship.
The symptoms I remember reminded me of Parkinson's disease, but this video is not a diagnosis. Only a qualified health professional can diagnose Parkinson's disease or another neurological condition.
This episode is ultimately about something bigger:
What happens when someone who once cared for others becomes vulnerable and needs care himself?
We also explore:
🌱 Ageing and dignity
🌱 Loneliness and social connection
🌱 Caring for elderly people
🌱 The importance of appropriate medical attention
🌱 Family and companionship
🌱 What agriculture can teach us about caring for what grows older
A tree may need support as it grows older.
That does not mean it has lost its value.
Neither does an elderly person lose their value because their strength has reduced.
Please watch, share and tell me about a teacher whose memory has stayed with you.
And if you have a real-life story that can teach someone something about marriage, family, money, sacrifice, ageing, preparation or dignity in old age, you can send it to me privately. Identities and identifying details will be changed where necessary.
These stories are not meant to expose people. They are meant to teach us.
