There are some days when I look around and realize I am standing inside a life I once only hoped for. This view is from the bow of our boat at the May River Sandbar in Bluffton, South Carolina — the same river I grew up on, now carries my husband and our four babies. A typical sandbar day starts with Pub subs (Publix has the best subs), Poppis, water bottles, and enough snacks to keep everybody happy. The baby gets into his puddle jumper, we walk down the dock, and he settles into his little boat swing — which may be my favorite thing on the entire boat, and probably his too. If the tide is right, we head straight for the sandbar. My older son stalks crabs and minnows and somehow manages to make friends everywhere he goes. The girls dance, float, swim, and invent their own little worlds. We stay for as many hours as we possibly can. If we catch the river at high tide, the tubes come out and their daddy races them up and down the May River until everyone is worn out and happy. We joke that we should name the boat Homeschoolin’, with four little fish underneath it — one for each of our kids. Partly because it makes us laugh. But also because it is true. We love to learn and live outside. There are so many real-life lessons waiting on the river — tides, wildlife, weather, navigation, patience, confidence, curiosity. Childhood feels very big out here. But when I look at all four of our children on this river, what I feel most is gratitude. I have loved their daddy since I was 15 years old. I doodled his name in my notebooks in high school. I have always loved that man. And now I get to sit beside him on a boat, with our four babies, in my hometown, heading toward the same sandbar where I once spent days with my own parents. Sometimes that realization catches me. This is nothing shy of dreams that God allowed to be brought forth into reality. My husband works incredibly hard. His job lost its luster a long time ago, but he keeps showing up for our family. And when we get him out on the river, I can almost watch the weight come off of him. For him, the river is freedom. It is adventure and sunshine. Smiling kids. Salt air. Nature. A boat pointed toward nowhere in particular and enough daylight left to keep going. And maybe that is part of making motherhood magical too — noticing the man beside you who is helping build the magic. Not every beautiful family memory begins with an elaborate plan. Sometimes it starts with a cooler full of sandwiches, four kids climbing aboard, and a dad who finally gets a few hours to breathe. This piece began with one of those afternoons — the May River opening up in front of us and the sandbar waiting in the distance — and I gave it the Gilded & Gathered treatment with soft painterly texture, luminous Lowcountry color, and just enough romance to hold onto how the day actually felt. Gilded & Gathered is about gathering the beautiful pieces of real life before they pass too quickly — the landscapes we love, the people who make them matter, and the ordinary days that somehow become the ones we wish we could live again. Because romanticizing your life is not pretending it is perfect. Sometimes it is simply looking around and realizing that something you once dreamed about is happening right now. Because beautiful places — and beautiful memories — belong at home. Gathered from real life. Gilded into something worth keeping. 📍 May River Sandbar | Bluffton, South Carolina 🚤 A weekday on the May River 🎨 Gilded & Gathered #MayRiver #MayRiverSandbar #BlufftonSC #BlufftonSouthCarolina #SouthCarolinaLowcountry #Lowcountry #LowcountryLiving #LowcountryArt #CoastalArt #BoatLife #RiverLife #HomeschoolLife #Homeschooling #IntentionalMotherhood #MakingMotherhoodMagical #RomanticizeYourLife #FamilyMemories #CoastalLiving #GildedAndGathered
