On a September afternoon in eighteen seventy-eight, a mine fire deep beneath the Welsh village of Abercarn could not be reached or put out from below. To smother the flames, engineers turned a canal into the shaft and flooded the pit. More than two hundred and sixty men and boys never came up, and most remain underground to this day.
This film traces the valley that coal built, the gassy seam everyone knew was dangerous, the ignition at midday, the impossible rescue, and the trust fund that supported the bereaved for fifty years. Stay to the end for what the disaster left behind.
