P6-E43: On **26 August 2026**, a catastrophic glacier-related slope failure in the Himalayas triggered an extraordinary chain of events across the **China–Nepal border**, devastating the Lhende Khola, Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river corridors.
In this documentary, we reconstruct the event using **satellite imagery, scientific analysis, hydrological data, maps and verified reports**.

The scientifically supported sequence is:

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimates that the debris flow and flood travelled **nearly 100 km**. The initial slope failure generated seismic energy equivalent to approximately **M5.2**, while a second seismic event approximately three hours later generated energy equivalent to **M4.2**. USGS states that the exact initial failure mechanism is still being investigated.
🌊 WHY WAS IT SO DESTRUCTIVE?
This was not simply a normal rainfall flood.
The moving mass contained **ice, water, rock, sediment and boulders**. As it travelled downstream, it entrained additional water and material from the river system, transforming into a powerful debris flow and flash flood.
Satellite analysis shows the disaster corridor extending from the high Himalayas through the *Lhende Khola and Trishuli Khola* system.
The flood then travels downstream through the Bhote Koshi–Trishuli corridor, affecting settlements, bridges, roads, hydropower infrastructure and monitoring stations.

🧊 GLACIER COLLAPSE vs GLOF
An important scientific distinction:
A *GLOF — Glacial Lake Outburst Flood* — occurs when water stored in a glacial lake is suddenly released.
The Nepal event should **not automatically be described as a GLOF**.
USGS currently describes the initiating mechanism as either a **landslide incorporating part of a glacier or a glacial collapse**, followed by an ice/debris avalanche and downstream flooding.
⚡ WHY THIS EVENT MATTERS FOR INDIA
The Himalayas are a rapidly changing high-mountain environment.
Events involving *glacier instability, rock avalanches, landslides, debris flows, glacial lakes and sudden floods* can create cascading hazards far beyond the initial collapse.
