When did humans stop thinking only about survival — and start caring about comfort, decoration, identity, and even luxury? In this video, we explore some of the earliest archaeological evidence that prehistoric humans were making life more comfortable and visually meaningful tens of thousands of years ago. From 77,000-year-old plant bedding at Sibudu Cave, to shell jewelry in Morocco and South Africa, ochre mixtures at Blombos Cave, decorated ostrich eggshell containers at Diepkloof, mammoth-ivory art from Hohle Fels, and elaborate burials at Sungir — the evidence shows that ancient humans were doing much more than simply finding food and avoiding danger. But was this really “luxury” in the modern sense? Or were comfort, decoration, identity, and social connection already becoming part of what made us human? This is the story of when survival started becoming something more.
