Weirdest RVs in the world, Unique camper vans, Crazy motorhomes
The Boaterhome. Mid-1980s.
From the front, it’s a Ford Econoline. A normal van. You’d park next to one at Home Depot and never look twice. But the whole back half? That’s a boat.
Back it down a ramp, release the latches, and the rear section floats off the chassis. Now you’ve got a motorboat on the lake... and a van on the shore.
On the road, you can walk from the driver’s seat straight into the cabin. Bed, kitchen, dinette. One vehicle, one parking spot, one weekend that covers the campground and the marina. No heavy trailer to hitch. No second driver needed. Just back it in... and go fishing.
Number eight. The Saab Toppola. Late 1970s.
In Sweden, someone looked at the compact Saab 99 hatchback and thought: what if the trunk was a full bedroom?
You take off the rear hatch. In its place, you bolt on a tall fiberglass shell. Suddenly, your daily commuter car has a cozy bed over the back seats, a small kitchen, and actual room to stand up straight.
It’s the size of a car... because it is a car. It fits in a regular parking space, a regular garage, and a normal driveway. Camping trip over? Unbolt the shell, put the hatch back on, and drive to work on Monday morning.
A camper and a daily driver. Same car.
