My seven final videos of various railway action filmed at the level crossing located just west of Whittlesey a few miles east of Peterborough in the north of Cambridgeshire. These are my final videos of this level crossing, though not the final videos of the level crossing which will be filmed and published. Until July of 2022, the very busy A605 main road ran across the busy Ely to Peterborough Line at this level crossing, and with the barriers lowered for a significant fraction of a typical hour, it caused a lot of traffic congestion on this very busy road. Now, the A605 runs across the railway via a new flyover called the Ralph Butcher Causeway without having to worry about the lowered barriers at this level crossing. All featured videos were filmed within less than an hour of each other (and during this time there was one additional other lowering which isn't featured), highlighting how busy this line can at times get. Also, significantly less freight than usual was running on this line on this day, though some freight is still featured.
When these videos were filmed, the level crossing was bypassed yet still open to works traffic, and still surprisingly busy whilst works to the new flyover were completed, and with the main road traffic no longer using this level crossing, every passing vehicle was kicking up a lot of dust that had settled on the road. The level crossing finally shut for good in November 2022 (within only a few weeks of this video being published at most), as much as 4 months after the bypass opened. The level crossing was operated from the signal box located directly next to it, though this signal box remains even with the level crossing closed and to be removed as it still has control over nearby Funthams Lane Level Crossing via CCTV, and is an important part of the fringe to Peterborough Signal Box and the East Coast Main Line. The road up to the railway lines each side will remain, one side to access the signal box, the other as a trackside access point. The provision of opening the flyover with closing this level crossing didn't go to plan due to the complex procedures needed to close the level crossing, added to the fact that the bypass was opened as much as six months earlier than planned for.
Apologies about missing the start of the first activation, as the passing freight train made up about 4 minutes between March and Whittlesey out of nowhere. Also bear in mind that the Greater Anglia Service seen twice in this video blasted its very peculiar-sounding horn each time(!)
Thanks for watching!
