陳秀雯: Waterfront Showdown (湖海爭霸錄) - OST - On the Waterfront 1980 (湖海爭霸錄) - English Translation

Translating the main theme song (片頭曲) "Waterfront Showdown" (湖海爭霸錄) from the On the Waterfront 1980 (湖海爭霸錄) into English. Original Cantonese Song by Amy Chan (陳秀雯). "On the Waterfront" was released by ATV in 1980 and serves as the final chapter in the wuxia trilogy that includes "Reincarnated 1979" and "Dragon Strike 1979". The script for the series was also written by Wong Yik (黃鷹), better known as Huang Yi. The story takes place several generations after "Dragon Strike" to the extent that there are no returning characters in this series. Past characters are only referenced in dialogue between the characters. The martial arts exist to a degree or is talked about. Other than that there linkages to the prior series are pretty loose. It is just another typical story featuring martial arts clans, good and bad, caught up in a royal court struggle for power. The director also made the weird choice of inviting actors/actresses from the previous two series to play new roles. This ruined the continuity and feel of a trilogy for me. In addition, apart from the main character, no one really got a happy ending this series. That is the standard theme for the series. The series ended up being remade as New Reincarnated 2001 (新天蚕变/金蚕丝雨) following a reboot of "Dragon Strike" as "Reincarnated II". The cast of "On the Waterfront" included the likes of Kenneth Tsang (曾江), Norman Chui (徐少強), Michelle Yim (嚴惠玲), Candice Yu (余安安) and Candy Wen (文雪兒), amongst others. ATV has a habit of casting veteran actors to play mid-20s characters. It happened here with veteran Kenneth Tsang playing the leading role. It has hard to take his character seriously and he looked a bit too old for the girls playing his love interests in the series. Norman Chui came back into the series to play an evil character with a redeeming arch. His ending/demise was a bit of a head scratchier for me. Candice Yu also featured in the series in a different role. Still playing that girl who is unlucky in love though. She mysteriously skipped the last 10 episodes of the show and we're told that her character became a nun from her master. I wonder if Candice left the show after she was handed the script for the last few episodes indicating she wouldn't end up with the main character? I am just speculating here as she may have had a scheduling conflict. Candy Wen featured in a minor role. Michelle Yim was also in the series. Whilst she played a major role, I didn't find her character that interesting. The best thing about this series is probably the theme song, which I liked. It was sang by Amy Chan and I've given it the title "Waterfront Showdown". Anyway, enjoy... I am willing to take requests to translate other TVB, ATV or wuxia songs in the comments section.
