Friedrichshain is one of the better known and more diverse localities of Berlin. 137,000 people live on roughly 10 square kilometres and the living realities are really different. Wealthy families that found a new home on Stralau, a peninsula, students and artists that try their luck near Boxhagener Platz or old Berliner*innen that reside in Karl-Marx-Allee for decades.
On my tour I focus on the South of Friedrichshain, an area that has changed dramatically. Once wasteland with abandoned buildings and railway tracks, now you see tall office buildings, the East Side Mall, and exclusive residential towers right next to the Spree.
The East Side Gallery is what you reminds me that you are right next to a former deadly border. With its colourful paintings it has become a popular tourist attraction, however.
