Ford’s Boss 429 engine was so massive it would not fit inside a standard Mustang.
To make it work, Ford sent unfinished 1969 Mustangs to Kar Kraft in Brighton, Michigan, where the front suspension and shock towers were heavily modified to create enough room for the enormous 429 “Shotgun” V8.
The result became one of the rarest and most legendary Mustangs ever built: the Boss 429.
But there was a twist. Ford wasn’t building these Mustangs because it wanted to race them in NASCAR. The cars existed largely to satisfy homologation requirements so the 429 engine could compete in Ford’s NASCAR program.
This is the story of Kar Kraft, the Boss 429 Mustang, and one of Detroit’s most extreme engineering solutions.
