There’s a New Plan to Replace the Airbus A380!

Hundreds of aging Airbus A380s and Boeing 777-300ERs will need to be replaced over the coming decades, while congested airports like Heathrow, Frankfurt and Dubai continue demanding larger aircraft. Boeing is studying the stretched Boeing 777-10, potentially carrying around 450–500 passengers, while Airbus is considering an even larger A350 variant known as the A350-2000. Both aircraft could become the next generation of high-capacity twin-engine jets designed to replace many of the missions once flown by the A380. But Emirates president Tim Clark still wants something even bigger — a modernized A380 powered by next-generation Rolls-Royce UltraFan engines. Airbus, however, has little appetite to spend tens of billions developing another four-engine superjumbo for such a limited market. The biggest obstacle may not even be the aircraft themselves. New engines, certification challenges, development costs and airline commitments could ultimately decide whether Boeing or Airbus builds the true successor to the A380.
