GLP-1 medications have changed the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity, and semaglutide has been shown to reduce heart attack and stroke risk in high-risk patients. These powerful drugs also carry real risks. They include severe gastrointestinal effects, gastroparesis, ileus, pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, and aspiration during anesthesia. There is also a growing concern about sudden vision loss from a condition called NAION.
In this episode of Lexcura Clinical Insights, Michelle Carroll, Founder and Chief Clinical Strategist of Lexcura Summit, looks at GLP-1s from both the clinical side and the legal side. She explains how these drugs work and where the risks come from. She then walks through the federal gastroparesis litigation and the court's requirement for a gastric emptying study, the newer vision loss MDL, and the gap between U.S. labeling and international safety warnings. She also covers the separate liability questions raised by compounded GLP-1s. Michelle closes with a five-point framework for reviewing GLP-1 medical records: the prescribing decision, the source and dose of the drug, the symptom timeline, the diagnostic workup, and other conditions or medications that could explain the injury.
