Río Secreto (Secret River) is a semi-flooded limestone cave system located south of Playa del Carmen, and north of Tulum, Mexico. A Backpacker’s Guide to Visiting Rio Secreto: • Location & Access: After flying to the Cancún International Airport (CUN), take a private shuttle, rental car, or public bus (Autobuses Mayab) from the airport terminal along Federal Highway 307 toward Playa del Carmen. • Best Views & Parking: Underground Formations: Best underground formations with thousands of spectacular stalactites, stalagmites, and crystal-lined limestone columns. Plenty of complimentary parking at the entrance. • Best Time & Seasons: Dry Season (Nov–April): Minimal rainfall and cooler outdoor temperatures - daily lows of 18–21°C (65–70°F) to afternoon highs of 28–31°C (82–88°F). Peak tourism months with larger crowds and busier tour slots. Book early mornings to see morning light filtering through cave openings. Wet and Rainy Season (May–Oct): Paths leading to and from the cave entrances will be exceptionally hot, sticky, and humid. Inside the cave, the subterranean climate becomes natural air conditioning. Temperatures maintain a consistent 24°C–25°C (75°F to 77°F) year-round. Due to the rainy season, heavy rain filters down through the limestones and causes the water levels inside the cave to rise. Tour becomes an adventure wearing a wetsuit and swimming. Nearby Attractions: • Playa del Carmen (Quinta Avenida): Shopping mall offering local shopping, dining, and night life. • Tulum Archaeological Site: Clifftop Mayan ruins overlooking the Caribbean Sea. • Xcaret Park: Amusement park featuring Mexican culture, wildlife and river floating. • Ecopark Kantun Chi: Quiet, natural eco-park offering subterranean caverns and forest trails. Swimming and Kayaking. • Cenote Chaak Tun: Subterranean cavern system illuminated by natural fragmented light. Flashlight swimming. • Cenote Azul: Open body of sunlit freshwater. Ideal for swimming, and snorkeling.
