Your company can give you opportunities. Your manager can support you. Your team can help you grow.
But your career ultimately belongs to you.
A few years ago, I had just been promoted when I received an offer from another organization with a significantly better compensation package. I felt guilty about leaving so soon after my promotion.
I spoke to my manager expecting a difficult conversation.
Instead, he told me something I'll never forget:
*"Your career is your own."*
That conversation changed how I think about career decisions.
In this video, I talk about:
Why we sometimes confuse loyalty with career growth
Why your manager shouldn't be the person planning your entire career
Why you shouldn't wait for your company to define your next step
Why gratitude doesn't mean obligation
Why knowing your market value matters
Why career decisions aren't always about taking the highest salary
How to take ownership of your career without burning bridges
After more than 10 years in software engineering, this is one of the lessons I wish I'd understood much earlier.
Your company can be part of your career.
*But it doesn't own it.*
If you're a software engineer thinking about your next career move, I hope this helps you look at the decision from a different perspective.
