Difficult conversations are a normal part of working life, whether you are addressing underperformance, responding to a complaint, correcting a mistake or managing conflict. This lesson explains how to handle these discussions professionally and constructively. You will learn why conversations become difficult, including the effects of strong emotions, misunderstandings, conflicting perspectives and power imbalances. It then sets out practical preparation steps: clarify your objective, gather accurate evidence, choose an appropriate setting and anticipate possible reactions. The lesson introduces a four-stage structure: establish a professional tone, describe the issue objectively, listen and explore the other person’s perspective, and agree practical actions, responsibilities and timescales. It also explains how to manage emotions through calm communication, respectful language, active listening and appropriate pauses. Applying this approach can reduce defensiveness, prevent conflict from escalating and support collaborative problem-solving. The lesson concludes with a useful process to remember: prepare, open, discuss, listen, agree actions and follow up.
