Dr. Watson receives a desperate appeal from his old schoolfellow, Percy Phelps, a rising Foreign Office diplomat. Tasked with copying a top-secret naval treaty between Great Britain and Italy, Phelps left his desk for mere minutes—only for the document to vanish when a mysterious bell rang. Afflicted with brain fever for weeks, Phelps begs Holmes to recover his lost honour. Put on your headphones and immerse yourself in this masterclass of Victorian espionage, deduction, and dramatic reveals, tailored for bedtime relaxation, restful sleep, study focus, or English listening practice.
📖 Story Synopsis:
Percy Phelps, nephew of Foreign Minister Lord Holdhurst, is entrusted with copying an immensely sensitive secret naval treaty. Late one rainy evening at the Foreign Office, after ringing for coffee, Phelps hears the bell of his own office ringing. Rushing back, he discovers the original treaty has been stolen from his desk. The catastrophic loss drives Phelps into a nine-week delirium of brain fever at Briarbrae, his fiancée's family home in Woking. Once recovered, he calls upon Sherlock Holmes. After inspecting the Foreign Office, examining the curious suspects, and thwarting a stealthy knife-wielding intruder trying to break into Phelps's sickroom, Holmes devises an ingenious night stakeout to unmask the traitor and presents the lost treaty in the most dramatic breakfast dish in Baker Street history.
