Discover how effective planning turns careful observation and assessment into meaningful learning for young children. This lesson explains the observation, assessment and planning (OAP) cycle, showing how practitioners use evidence of children’s interests, actions and development to decide what should happen next. Using a water-play example, it demonstrates how a child’s repeated filling and pouring can lead to thoughtfully chosen resources, language-rich interactions and links to early literacy. The lesson also explores why planning is more than paperwork or a weekly timetable: it includes experiences, activities, routines and the design of safe, stimulating environments. You will consider holistic development across cognitive, physical, social and emotional, communication and language areas, as well as the importance of play-based and hands-on learning. The session concludes by showing how intentional provision helps children feel seen, supported and ready to explore, wonder and grow.
